DAY 2 LAKE GARDA AND LAKE LEDRO

The cycle path that goes from Rovereto to Italy’s largest lake is the most fun and eco-friendly way of getting to the ‘Busa’, which is the flattish area in Upper Lake Garda. After riding through the old town centre in Mori and the Lago di Loppio nature area, we’ll arrive directly at the small village of Nago to feast our eyes on the most stunning panorama of the Sarca river mouth, which feeds into the lake. We’ll then continue to Torbole, a romantic village on the shores of Lake Garda and, lastly, cycling around the north shore, we’ll reach Riva del Garda, a charming alpine beauty spot. This is the starting point for one of Europe’s most beautiful routes, the Ponale: a road dug into the rockface, with a sheer drop to the lake, rising gently upwards on its western side. This easy route, suitable for all levels, is incredibly picturesque. It will take us through cypress groves, tunnels and breathtaking panoramas. We’ll continue in the direction of Lake Ledro, where we’ll stop off for lunch (cost of lunch not included). On our way back to Rovereto, we’ll cycle along the panoramic Busatte path

DAY 3 THE CASTLES OF THE NORTHERN LAGARINA VALLEY

Our first stop today is Castel Noarna, a practically intact medieval village nestled in the countryside, high above the valley. We will then continue to Castel Pietra, another stunning medieval spot north of Rovereto, and on towards Castel Beseno, the largest fortress in Trentino, which offers unique views over the Lagarina Valley. After lunch (extra) we will return towards Rovereto along the cycle route which runs alongside the River Adige and the Taio nature area, among vineyards and farmland.

DAY 4 – Check-out and departure (self-transport). Or for those continuing the tour, a day off.

DAY 5 LAKE GARDA AND MONTE BALDO

We’ll cycle to Riva del Garda again, where we’ll take a ferry to Limone-Malcesine. We’ll take some time out to admire Lake Garda in all its glory. Then from Malcesine we’ll take the rotating cable car which will take us up to the top of Monte Baldo (1760m), to gaze at a unique panorama, with the whole lake at our feet, set between the mountains like a Norwegian fjord. Monte Baldo is the most precious jewel within the Trentino Arena Experience – Vallagarina Destination and was recently nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. On one side it towers high above Lake Garda, and on the other it overlooks the vineyards of the Adige valley. In wintertime its snowy slopes offer plenty of fun for winter sports enthusiasts. It’s equally appealing in the other seasons too: wildflower meadows in spring, gorgeous lake views in summer, and colourful beech forests in autumn. Back in the 1500s it became known as Hortus Italiae, the Garden of Italy; the Baldo Natural Park features remarkable biodiversity. For centuries, the area has been a mecca for naturalists, apothecaries, pharmacists, botanists and geologists. After having lunch at a malga (extra) with traditional Trentino fare, we will begin our thrilling descent towards Rovereto, taking us via Passo San Valentino and Brentonico.

DAY 6 – Check-out and departure (self-transport). Or, for those continuing the tour: THE CASTLES OF THE SOUTHERN LAGARINA VALLEY

We’ll set off for the Castello di Sabbionara d’Avio, a historic building in the south of Trentino. With its imposing keep, five towers and sturdy castle walls, it overlooks the valley with views almost as far as Verona. Lunch (extra) and visit to a farm, with optional tasting of local produce (extra), and return to Rovereto on the cycle path through the vineyards.

DAY 7EREMO DI SAN COLOMBANO AND TRENTO

The final stop on this cycling tour is at the San Colombano Hermitage, a miracle of architecture that clings to the rockface high above the Leno torrent, just a few kilometres from Rovereto. Sheltered by a natural roof of rock, it is dedicated to the saint who, as legend has it, came as a knight and slayed the dragon who was killing the children baptised in the river water. It is believed that the hermit’s cave was inhabited from the year 753, while the small church and hermitage attached were built in the 10th century. We will then head for Trento (with lunch along the way, extra), for a final ride around the scenic Lagarina Valley and a tour of the city’s old town centre. On our way back, we’ll visit a local winery and enjoy a wine-tasting aperitif (extra).

 DAY 8 – Check-out and departure (self-transport). ‘Arrivederci’ Trentino!

During the tours we’ll be stopping off at ‘malghe’, traditional mountain inns where lunch is available (cost of meal not included in the package). Alternatively, you can bring your own packed lunch.
